Learning to cook in a new country

When I moved to Germany, the supermarkets were a puzzle. I had to learn what each label meant, find substitutes for ingredients I took for granted, and accept that dinner would sometimes be a comedy of errors. Six months later, I can cook a local stew and a meal that reminds me of home. The kitchen became the place where I felt most settled.
